I was the recipient of a 2016-2017 Valenti scholarship and the impact it has had on my time at the University of Houston is difficult to put into words. As a freshman, you often don’t qualify for many university scholarships. However, the Valenti School opens up scholarships for any student declared as a communications major or minor, and that is truly incredible. As a student taking 17 hours each semester, as well as working two part-time jobs, this scholarship has greatly helped take the burden off of paying for college. Before receiving this scholarship, I was under a great amount of stress: How will I have time to study and work enough to pay my way through school? How can I expect my parents to pour so much money into my education, when they have bills themselves? How will I make this month’s tuition payment? Will I be able to afford next semester’s fees?

After being awarded the West Endowment scholarship, I was able to focus more on my studies and less on the burden of how I was going to pay for it all. I will forever be grateful for the Valenti School for providing the opportunity to receive these awards because without them I wouldn’t be able to accomplish my dreams of earning my degree.
